Dwaraka Tirumala is an ancient holy shrine and a popular pilgrim centre in Andhra Pradesh. Dwaraka Tirumala is located at 15KM away from Bhimadole Junction. It is named after a great saint, “Dwaraka” who located the self-manifested idol of Lord Sri Venkateswara.
Legend has it that, Sage Dwaraka performed penance here on Seshachala Hills for the Lord Vishnu. Impressed with the penance, Lord self-manifested here in an anthill facing south. The Sage was able to unearth the upper part of the Idol and the remaining half is still in the anthill. Later in the 11th Century AD, Saint Ramanujacharya installed another idol following Vaikhanasa Agama Sastra on devotees' request. Abhishekam is not performed to the deity as half of the Idol is covered with the anthill.
The present form of the temple was built by Mylavaram Zamindars. Gopura, Mandap, Vimana and outer walls were built by Dharma Apparao during 1762 – 1827 AD. From the inscriptions, it is known that Rani Chinnamma Rao gifted jewels to the deity during 1877 – 1902 AD.
Dwaraka Tirumala Temple is visited yearly by thousands of devotees, especially during festivals. A few of the events and festivities celebrated here are Giripradakshina, Mukkoti/ Vykunta Dwara Darsanam, Swamy Vari Vysakha Masa tiru Kalyanam, Pavitrotsavams, Samy Vari Aswayuja Masa tiru Kalyanam and Teppostavam.
The sanctum sanctorum has the deity Lord Venkateswara who is visible up to the Bust and the lower portion is under the ground. The holy feet are offered to Bali Chakravarthi underground for daily worship. The full-size idol of Lord Sri Venkateswara is installed by the great social reformer Srimad Ramanuja of the 11th century. The idols of Padmavathi and Nanchari are installed in the Arthamandapa facing east.
